A Rapid Intervention Crew is a dedicated on-scene team that is prepared to quickly locate and rescue firefighters who are in distress, trapped, or incapacitated inside a structure. This role is essential because conditions on the fireground can change in seconds, and having a specially trained team with ready entry, search, and rescue capability minimizes the time a downed firefighter remains in danger. The crew operates under a plan aligned with the incident command system, maintains clear communications, and carries the tools and equipment needed to locate, access, and remove a firefighter safely, including approaches for assessment, air management, and extraction if necessary. This focus on immediate rescue distinguishes the RIC from other functions on the fireground. It’s not primarily responsible for managing suppression equipment, overseeing victim extrication, or coordinating aerial operations, which are handled by other roles and teams.
